Tara Kanetkar

Somerset-   Dr. Tara Kanetkar, suddenly passed away in her own home on the morning of Thursday, January 26. She had just turned 92 on January 1.

She was well-known as a Family Practice/ Pediatrics physician in the area of Edison, where she practiced from 1972 to 2006. Since childhood, it was her dream to pursue a medical career. To do so, she had to overcome several hurdles: growing up in a rural Indian village with limited educational opportunities, and later, competing in a primarily male-dominated field.

In 1963, Tara received a scholarship from the India Foundation to attend an internship program at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, NJ. This training turned out to be the foundation for her medical career in the U.S. as she then gained admission to a Residency in Family Practice/Pediatrics which led her to begin her own private practice in 1972.

But as passionate as Tara was about medicine, she was equally devoted to her family:  husband Pramod, daughter Manisha, and son Jayat. Evan after a long, hard day at work, she was always there for them in every way and empathized with their issues.

In addition to juggling her career and family, Tara still found time to pursue her hobbies - reading, and creative cooking. After her retirement, she read even more books, went for daily walks, played tennis with her husband, and spent more time with her four grandchildren.

Everyone who knew her all concur that her energy, enthusiasm, and sense of humor has made her a role model. She will be missed by her family and friends dearly.
