Sweeta S. Chauhan
September 19, 1974 – March 11, 2025
Kota, Rajasthan, India | Three Bridges, New Jersey
Sweeta S. Chauhan, surrounded by loved ones, passed on in New Brunswick, New Jersey, at age 50 on March 11, 2024. Despite a resilient 7-year battle with cancer, she approached life with positivity, dignity, and love, experiencing more adventures and making more memories than most could ever dream of.
Sweeta was born on September 19, 1974 in Kota, Rajasthan, India, the youngest of three sisters, to Shakuntala Shahi and Hari Nath Singh, who instilled strong values of courage, independence, and compassion in their children.
She had a lifelong love for education, demonstrated by her enthusiastic presence at numerous highly-esteemed institutions. She attended Mount Carmel High School in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India and graduated from JK high school in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. She later obtained her BSc at PPN College, Masters in Geology at Kumaun University, and PG Diploma in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems at Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Research Institute.
Sweeta married Amit Singh in 2003. She then ventured overseas to leave her mark in the United States, where she dedicated her time to being a passionate lecturer in Geology at Rutgers University-Newark Campus, since 2006. She was a caring professor who deeply loved her students. She inspired both her students and colleagues with her unwavering devotion, perseverance, and warmth.
She also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She could often be found traveling the world, meticulously trinket shopping, advocating for the environment, making friends with anyone and everyone, admiring the arts, and most of all, yip yapping away.
Sweeta was preceded in death by her dear father, Hari. She is survived by her loving family: mother Shakuntala; husband Amit; sisters Kavita Singh and Dr. Seema Ahuja; nieces Anshika Singh and Amisha Singh; and nephew Anand Ahuja. Her many beloved and cherished colleagues, students, friends, and family have been wonderful additions in her life, and their love and support meant more than words can ever express.
Contributions in Sweeta’s honor may be made to Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.
